What is Excoriation Disorder?

Excoriation disorder, also known as skin-picking disorder, is a condition in which individuals repeatedly pick at their skin, causing significant damage. This behavior may target healthy skin or minor skin irregularities, leading to sores, scars, and infections. Like other body-focused repetitive behaviors, excoriation disorder can be challenging to control.

Signs & Symptoms of Excoriation Disorder:
- Frequent skin-picking that results in sores, scars, or tissue damage.
- Significant time spent picking skin, often several hours a day.
- Failed attempts to stop skin-picking, despite the physical and emotional harm it causes.
- Avoidance of social situations due to embarrassment over skin appearance.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly Habit Reversal Training (HRT), is often used to treat excoriation disorder by helping individuals become aware of their behavior and develop alternative responses.
